There will be no power hour this week because Sunday is Laurel Ridge Day!

We’ll spend the day together in the mountains. I look forward to seeing you there!

Scripture Meditation

Because he himself was tested by what he suffered, he is able to help those who are being tested. – Hebrews 2:18

This verse was a bit of a jarring reminder this week. It served as a reminder of the things I have suffered. It was a push to look back on life a bit more than I normally do.  When we have suffered, we tend to push that to the back of our minds and move along. We don’t always go back to those stories. The suffering shaped us, but it can be scary to open up about that suffering, either to just ourselves or to those around us as well.

We are called by Christ to be in loving community with one another. It’s important to remind ourselves that being in community isn’t always rainbows and sunshine. Sometimes, being in community means sharing our stories, even (or especially) the ones that are hard to tell.

Opening up and sharing the stories that leave us feeling exposed and vulnerable is terribly difficult. Vulnerability is scary. It’s okay to be scared. Pushing through that fear and allowing ourselves to be real with those around us is what matters. It is important to share the stories of your suffering, whether it was the first week of 6th grade, a friend breaking your trust, losing a loved one, or anything else that taught you what suffering meant.

By sharing these stories, we form community, and can help those who may be going through something similar. Perhaps someone once shared their story and helped you through a hard time. I’m sure it was scary for them to be vulnerable. We can do scary things.

Below: The HMC youth got to hang out for a couple of hours at William and Kate’s house. We played volleyball, chess, and jenga and had some amazing burgers! Thank you to the Sanders family for hosting an amazing cookout.
