Living Our Gifts
“Living our Gifts” is an ongoing series of personal accounts by members of the congregation who share information and stories about their involvement in a variety of activities at Home Moravian. Almost all of our members give of their time and talents in some form of service at the church or in outreach activities. “Living our Gifts” moments are often presented during worship services or in the monthly Home-to-Home newsletters.
Here is an example of a recent “Living our Gifts”:
Shortly after graduating from Appalachian State University in May 1981, I was asked if I would like to become an usher on the third Sunday of each month. Upon accepting this position I had no idea of the amount of responsibilities, intricate details and the impact ushers have on the mechanics of our church services. I also didn’t realize the amount of personal contact we have with each member of our congregation.
On my first Sunday of ushering I received my initial instructions from I. B. Southerland Jr., along with my lapel pin that I have since worn at each of our services. I then reported to third Sunday sexton, Dewey Fincannon and assistant third Sunday sexton, Francis “Sleepy” Bryant and was asked to hand out bulletins at the front door since the usher that normally handled that position was away on family vacation. Little did I know as I took my position for the first time in the south vestibule that I was truly finding a home in the life of the church.
It is now almost 30 years later and the relationships and experiences that I have shared with my fellow ushers are priceless. Whether it be escorting someone to their seat, helping kids find their way to Godly Play, handing out bulletins, assisting ministers, making sure the “leave empty” signs are placed correctly or the simple act of greeting people while extending the right hand of fellowship is something I thoroughly enjoy. To say I love ushering is an understatement.
It is also an honor to have served with so many fine members including I. B. Southerland III, my dad, Allen Goslen, John Dewees, Art Sorensen and many more. The devotion that all ushers show to our church does not go unnoticed. The services that we provide are an important part in the life and success of our church and I personally look forward to many more years of ushering.
My favorite services to usher are the Christmas Eve Lovefeasts. Having the honor of being a part of all of the services from morning to night is a true gift that I receive each year. I wish everyone could experience the contact with almost 3,000 people who worship with us during this special time of the year. It is truly inspirational.
